The Sunflower

A lovely cat client gave me some sunflowers for looking after her cat so I thought I would mention a little about the mythology of this flower. In Greek mythology, the sunflower is associated with the myth of Clytie and Helios. Clytie was a water nymph, and deeply in love with the sun god Helios, but it was unrequited. She watched him crossing the sky for days without food and water, before eventually transforming into a sunflower which is why the sunflower still faces the sun today. Fittingly therefore, in the Victorian Flower Language, the Sunflower represents loyalty, longevity, and adoration. It is also said that they bring good luck when given for events such as graduations and new business openings.
